Dubai: The 1st heat of the traditional Rowing Race held at Mina Seyahi on Saturday November 24th, made for a pleasant contrast between the old and the new with the Palm Jumeirah construction in the backdrop. The race was a display of sheer strength, skill and excellent communication between skipper and rowers. Moreover it was a perfect show of endurance. The modernity of the area with skyscrapers dotting the island and seafront made for an excellent backdrop of the lifestyle of a city that is bustling all the year round yet firmly rooted in its traditions.

The first heat of the traditional dhow sailing race in the 22 feet category race to be held Saturday 22nd September, 2007 marks the start of the DIMC watersports season. The much awaited season commences after a break of almost four months during the summer. Though the weather hasn’t much cooled off the sailors will be under stress due to the fast during the Holy Month of Ramadan. This is not in any way going to deter the sailors as they take gret pride in their traditional races. The last season witnessed a spectacular display of skill and tactic. Dhows sailed gloriously on the serene waters of the Arabian Sea along the Jumeirah coast, with courses set by Saeed Hareb, Managing Director, DIMC organiser of a season full of exhilarating watersports.

After a lull of four months over the summer season, the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) gets set for a brand new season of watersports activities. The first of the season kicks off with the 22 feet traditional dhow sailing races scheduled for September 22nd, 2007. The DIMC race calendar is a buzz with activity back to back starting September thru to June 2008 with races from traditional dhow sailing to the traditional Class III powerboat, rowing to modern sailing and the much awaited WPPA Class One World Powerboat Championship races under the aegis of the World Professional Powerboating Association that was formed on the UAE’s National Day, December 2nd 2006.

While the Greek Grand Prix may have faced organisational hiccups from the Local organisers side, the promoters of the World Professional Powerboating Association (WPPA), IOTA would have none of it again – the second time round.
While Alinghi basks in their glorious win over Emirates Team New Zealand, many hearts are a flutter for the Kiwis. Speaking to Saeed Hareb, Managing Director, Dubai International Marine Club, host to the Alinghi teams winter base here in Dubai, he said “I have been watching the America’s cup with great interest. It has been one of the most amazing sailing championships ever. While we congratulate the winners for their success it is Emirates Team New Zealand that we still would like to support, more so since they carry our national carrier Emirates as their sponsor”. Saeed said it was rather unfortunate that Emirates Team New Zealand managed four problems for which they paid the ultimate price.

Three short of a hundred triangular white sails dot the horizon as far as the eye can see. It is seconds after 7.30am, and the orange flare signifying the start of the 17th Sir Bu Naair Traditional Dhow Sailing Race has just been sighted, pale against an already bright sky. In the coming hours, 96 UAE and one lone Qatari crew put their strength and wits to the test against the elements of nature for one of the most prestigious sailing championships in the region.
When the 97 sailing dhows set out across the high seas for Dubai on Saturday, they recreated one of the epic journeys of the region's past. The 54-nautical mile voyage from Sir Bu Naair to Mina Seyahi may have been small compared to those undertaken by the great explorers of the last centuries, but was no less thrilling in its unpredictability, novelty and sense of discovery. Here was modern man, forsaking the technology and convenience of the present day for the simplicity and hardship of the past. Here was modern man learning to once more harness the awesome power of nature, riding the winds to safety and renown.

The highlight of this year’s 60ft traditional Dhow sailing races will take place with the hosting of Sir Bu Naair Traditional Dhow Sailing Race – 60ft, on Saturday 26th May 2007.
The spectacle of racing Dhows, with their unfurled sails carries the heritage of Arabic traditions, dating back to the period when Dubai was known for the pearl merchants. Sir Bu Naair Island represents a strategic point for the sailors, as it was used as a stopover for resting for the pearl diving boats, when they were en route back to Dubai from their long trips at sea. Boats used the island to rest their crew, to clean and arrange the display of their pearls, ready for trading before their arrival back to Dubai.

As roaring engines and 6 feet high water sprayed off the 20 registered entrants for the Sheikh Mayed Bin Mohammed Watersports Wooden Powerboat Cup held Saturday at 11.30 am in the presence of HH Sheikh Mayed, there was excitement, anxiety and trepidation as to who would emerge the winner. Speculation was rife but it had to be seen to be believed especially with stiff competition between Damas and the Godolphin teams.

Dubai: The second and penultimate race before the close of the season for the 60-feet Mina Seyahi traditional dhow sailing race was held at 2.30 pm Saturday May 5th, 2007 offshore from Jebel Ali to finish near port Rashid.
At the start of the race Atlas took flight and was way ahead of the others a distance of almost three miles. Staying his course skipper, Ahmed Rashid Al Suwaidi decided to sail through with just the main sail and this proved successful. After completing almost 14 NM of the 16 NM course the wind played truant and shifted in the opposite direction causing all dhows to come to a near stop. It was close to four hours after the start that the first boat arrived at the finish line followed by Rejam, skippered by Ahmed Tarish Al Quabaisi and Azzam captained by Hur Rashid Al Muhairi with a span of half an hour.

With a selection of packages for the individual, family, visitors, tourist or corporate client, the Sailing Academy will lead the way in marine leisure & recreation, and provide a platform for potential “sailors” from novice to professional to either learn to sail, or learn to perfect the art of racing.
Le Meridien Mina Seyahi is currently the training venue for the victorious America’s cup Alinghi sailing team, and provides the perfect conditions for all levels of participants.
